From Microbes to Molecules, FBI Brought Food Science to Life at AU
The Theophane Venard School of Food Biotechnology and Innovation at Assumption University of Thailand (AU) turned two April days into a lively introduction to the science of food, hosting Food Detective Camp 3 on April 20 and Food Chemistry Camp 3 on April 21, 2026, at the Hua Mak Campus.
Taken together, the back-to-back workshops offered students something both practical and quietly thrilling: the chance to see food not simply as something consumed, but as something investigated. Across two full days, participants moved between theory and laboratory practice, learning that the world of food science is built as much on curiosity as it is on precision. Certificates were presented at the close of each day, marking the completion of a program that did more than fill time. It opened a door.
What stood out was the school’s faith in experiential learning. These were not passive sessions built around memorization, nor were they designed merely to entertain. They asked students to observe closely, think critically, and participate fully. In doing so, they reflected a broader educational truth: that science becomes most meaningful when it is encountered directly.
By bringing microbiology and chemistry together over two consecutive days, the Theophane Venard School of Food Biotechnology and Innovation created an academic experience that was rigorous, accessible, and alive with discovery. It was the kind of program that reminded students that food science is not confined to textbooks or laboratories alone. It is present in everyday life, waiting to be understood.

Their inventions were evaluated by AU faculty members and staff based on creativity, functionality, and effective use of recycled materials. Scholarships were awarded to outstanding participants in two age categories, from kindergarten to Grade 3 and Grades 4 to 6.
This initiative demonstrates AU’s commitment to extending educational outreach beyond campus by sharing knowledge and expertise with local schools, promoting experiential learning among young learners, and fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices through university–school collaboration.

Sweet Start to Sustainability – AU Students Spark Change in Chan Krung
Assumption University of Thailand (AU) kicked off its Youth Volunteer Project 2025 with a high-impact field visit to the Chan Krung Community Enterprise on June 14, 2025. Backed by the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, this mission marked the first step in an ambitious community transformation journey. Under the theme “From Chan Krung Sugarcane to Creative Products: Adding Value and Building Sustainability,” AU students and faculty rolled up their sleeves and got to work—listening, learning, and laying the groundwork for something truly meaningful.
The project aims to breathe new life into Chan Krung’s locally grown sugarcane by transforming it into innovative, branded, market-ready products. But it’s not just about sweet treats—it’s about sustainable enterprise, economic empowerment, and local pride. For AU students, this wasn’t just a visit—it was an immersion. An opportunity to put theory into practice, apply their skills in real time, and co-create solutions with the community. From assessing local needs to brainstorming value-added products, the experience delivered hands-on learning with heart.
This field visit is just the beginning. As the sugarcane turns into opportunity, the partnership between AU and Chan Krung is set to grow deeper roots—nurturing innovation, resilience, and a future where education meets empowerment.
In addition to the educational outreach activities described above, Assumption University also promotes the dissemination of knowledge beyond the university campus through formal cooperation agreements with external organizations. These partnerships facilitate the sharing of academic expertise, educational resources, and specialized knowledge to support the development of external organizations, expand learning opportunities, and contribute to the advancement of education and society. The following examples illustrate the University’s collaborative efforts to extend the benefits of education and knowledge to the wider community.
AU Faculty on the Executive Board of the Distance Learning Foundation under Royal Patronage (DLTV)
Assumption University (AU) contributes to education outreach beyond campus through the appointments of four AU faculty members to the Executive Board of the Distance Learning Foundation under Royal Patronage. The appointees are Mr. Bancha Saenghirun, Advisor; Mr. Chinnathorn Chitwiriyanoon, Executive Board Member; Mr. Satha Phongtha, Executive Board Member; and Mrs. Thanawan Phongtha, Executive Board Member. This collaboration connects AU’s academic expertise with national initiatives to expand access to educational resources through Distance Learning Television (DLTV), which delivers lessons from Wang Klai Kangwon School under Royal Patronage to schools with limited teaching personnel and educational resources.
This collaboration demonstrates AU’s engagement with an external organisation to extend educational knowledge and learning opportunities beyond the university campus, supporting schools, teachers, and learners through technology-enabled education and the wider dissemination of educational resources.
